Diagnosing and Treating Restrictive Tethered Oral Tissues

Introduction

This comprehensive 2-day course is designed for pediatric dentists, general dentists, and pediatric medical providers who want to better understand, assess, and diagnose restrictive tethered oral tissues (RTOTs) while serving as part of the infant’s interdisciplinary healthcare team. It offers practical, clinically relevant information that participants can apply immediately in practice and is an excellent resource for both current and future laser users.

A surgical laser used for frenectomy procedures must be able to precisely vaporize soft tissue while also providing effective coagulation at the surgical margins. This is especially important in the treatment of lingual, labial, and buccal ties, where precision, visibility, and hemostasis matter. This course focuses on the practical use of laser surgery for RTOTs procedures, along with the fundamentals of laser-tissue interaction. The hands-on participation lab is designed to help attendees build safe, efficient techniques for frenectomy and related soft-tissue procedures.

Laser Curriculum

The Laser Surgery and Safety Basic Knowledge Certification Curriculum for this Course has been developed by the American Laser Study Club (ALSC). The ALSC’s curriculum overcomes the known limitations of many laser dentistry courses and includes the detailed physics of soft tissue ablation and coagulation with laser and hot tip (non-laser) devices. Laser hands-on wet lab on tissue samples will include laser safety instructions, frenectomy simulations, and other surgical laser procedure demonstrations. Laser instructions will be assisted by the guest speaker, Peter Vitruk, PhD, MInstP, a laser physicist who founded the American Laser Study Club and LightScalpel Inc.

Hands-On Participation Session

  • Laser Safety
  • Laser Surgical Technique Simulations
  • Superficial Ablation
  • Superficial Coagulation
  • Shallow Incisions
  • Deep Incisions
  • Practicing Surgical Techniques on a Pig Jaw
