Preparing for the ABLS Exam – Cynthia M. Lopez, MD
I felt a sense of not being able to pass the exam when I leafed through the study materials. They looked and felt overwhelming, so I did not do the Board. That was in 2012.
In 2017, I was invited by a laser company to talk about my experience and technique in treating acne scars in ethnic skin. After a few times of doing the talk circuit, sharing my “expertise” in lasering acne scars, I felt I was doing something wrong. I actually thought I was doing a con job. “How can I lecture to doctors about these laser treatments when I’m no better than them.?” Experience is not enough. That is when I reconsidered taking the board. I will not do another talk until I pass the board. When I leafed through the study materials again, my sense of bewilderment is the same. I answered the sample questions posted online and the result was shameful. I didn’t know anything!
I took 2 weeks off from work, studied the materials and other information sources, immersed myself in them, and truthfully, the study process – especially the science part, became enjoyable. My efforts paid off and I passed.
I am excited that there will be a Study Club. Thank you for doing this. I’m sure I will be active on the site.
